HRM TRAIL AUDITING INTERN, ALLTRAILS APP, HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA, APRIL-SEPTEMBER 2017

  • completed a self directed project

  • audited, hiked, mapped every hiking trail in the Halifax Regional Municipality for the AllTrails app database

  • assesed the merits of existing maps, creating maps for those areas that had no existing data or an outdated or inaccurate map

  • self initiated via a proposal to AllTrails to provide data in exchange for a global and accessible platform and internship supervision

  • November 2019: partially revisited in collaboration with the organization Trips by Transit, to add information on accessibility via specific local bus routes to each trail page
     

RENTAL HOST & OUTDOOR EDUCATOR, CAMP FIRCOM, GAMBIER ISLAND, BC — APRIL 2018-OCTOBER 2018
WINTER HOST, NOVEMBER 2018-MARCH 2019

  • responsible for the facilitation of guest experiences at camp

  • supervisor and point person for both guests and staff in other departments

  • lead guide for guest hiking, kayaking, tandem canoeing, voyageur canoeing, and paddle boarding excursions 

  • waterfront supervisor for rental groups

  • training of other staff in paddling techniques and rescue, proper equipment management, local interpretation knowledge

EXCEL PROGRAM GROUP LEADER, HALIFAX REGIONAL EDUCATION CENTRE (working at Hammonds Plains Consolidated Elementary), NOVEMBER 2019-JANUARY 2020

  • planning, execution, and coordination of recreation focused activities for elementary aged school children

  • primary to grade five

  • facilitate recreation based games and activities that allowed for the development of physical literacy, teamwork, and the development of problem solving skills, strategy, and creativity

  • incorporated winter programming into my work as a “club” activity to include more winter based outdoor recreation and introduce place based outdoor learning and exploration
     

FOUNDER & CREATOR, WINTER WONDERS PROGRAM, JANUARY 2020

  • Rising Youth Service Canada $750 Grant for execution and programming costs of the Winter Wonders Program

  • winter snowshoe education program I founded and designed for implementation in the EXCEL program at Hammonds Plains Elementary

  • 18 pairs of children and youth snowshoes

  • one hour sessions focusing on snowshoe skills, building physical literacy through winter sports and exercise, and mindful group reflection in a nature setting

  • children with ADHD particularly

  • all snowshoes were donated to Halifax Recreation to put towards their community rentals stock made available for local schools and families
     

WINTER WILDERNESS COURSE LOGISTICS AND INSTRUCTION, OUTWARD BOUND CANADA ATLANTIC BRANCH, FEBRUARY- APRIL 2020

  • direct, hands-on course support for winter wilderness programming

  • wilderness skills instruction

  • coordinated and organized food and gear drops, instructor support, student support both in and out of the field, planned and organized food for on course, scouted routes, and provided on call support for instructors

  • physical and emotional support for students learning skills and resiliency in a dynamic and harsh winter environment

  • hard skills such as hatchet and axe use, kindling chopping, and fire keeping, as well as soft skills such as stress and anxiety management in the outdoors, on trip emotional support, leave no trace principles, problem solving, and task management

  • expedition planning for Outward Bound as part of an initiative to collect data for proposals for future tripping beyond the 2020 season

  • sea kayaking expedition proposal for a 14 day outdoor education trip for high school aged students in the Bay of Exploits (place based research, map analysis, route planning, and inventory of local emergency resources, knowledge, history, and ecological conditions)

  • contract ended early due to COVID-19 pandemic + company shut-down 
     

OUTDOOR LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCE WILDERNESS INSTRUCTOR/PRIMARY TRIP LEAD TEAM 3, PINE RIVER INSTITUTE, SEPTEMBER 2020-MARCH 2022

  • clinical parent, working with youth struggling with mature development in response to a variety of behavioural, social, and traumatic experiences, most often in relation to addiction and mental health struggles

  • hold strict limits and boundaries, hold healthy relationships, communication, social dynamics

  • support the youth as they work through a mandatory wilderness stay as part of their therapeutic programming

  • safety, trip-prep, on-trip logistics and management, first aid, and emotional/therapeutic support for the youth in my care while on trip

  • year round (season of canoe tripping in Algonquin park, a fall hiking season on Crown land, a winter season involving pulks, snowshoes, and tarp tents, and a spring hiking season)

  • teach self and gear care, wilderness basics such as fire making, knots and shelters, wilderness cooking, tripping in a variety of seasonal conditions and forms and their associated skills, trip leadership, camp craft

  • support and instruct through therapeutic programming such a journaling on trust in relationships, writing intentional letters to begin family therapy with parents/guardians, community focused working and living, and the writing of a life story
